Transport Behavior and Degradation Methods of Antibiotic Contaminants in Aquatic Environments

Abstract

Antibiotics continuously enter aquatic environments through domestic sewage, hospital effluent, pharmaceutical wastewater, and runoff from livestock and aquaculture operations, subsequently migrating among the aqueous phase, suspended particulate matter, and sediments. This paper analyzes adsorption–desorption, hydrodynamic transport, photolysis, biodegradation, and related processes and compares biological treatment, adsorption, membrane separation, and advanced oxidation technologies. The findings indicate that pollution-control assessments should distinguish phase transfer, disappearance of the parent compound, and complete mineralization. Source reduction, combined treatment processes, and the integrated assessment of transformation products and antimicrobial-resistance risks should be strengthened.
