Abstract

The film Hello! Mr. Tree takes as its main narrative thread the mental collapse and psychological alienation of “Shu,” a marginalized figure at the bottom of society living amid the transformation of rural China. It creates a highly representative and typical image of an inferiority-based personality in contemporary Chinese realist cinema. Taking Alfred Adler’s theories of inferiority complex and psychological compensation in individual psychology as its core framework, this paper analyzes the traumatic roots, behavioral manifestations, and mechanisms of spiritual compensation that give rise to the protagonist Shu’s inferiority complex. Through close examination of details and psychoanalytic interpretation, the study finds that Mr. Shu’s timidity, ingratiating behavior, withdrawal, and hallucinations result from the combined effects of childhood trauma, his disadvantaged social position, and the loss of a sense of personal value. The process through which Mr. Shu moves from real life repression to mental breakdown fully presents the psychological collapse of an individual with an inferiority complex under conditions of deficient social support. By offering a psychological interpretation of this image of inferiority shaped by the film, this paper provides a case study for the psychological analysis of inferiority-based personality images among socially marginalized figures in artistic works.
